Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)

The UQ Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) is a well established, professionally accredited learning framework that is well-received by both students and the profession. The program has evolved into one of the country's most comprehensive and well-respected pharmacy degrees, both domestically and internationally.
The undergraduate program runs over 4 years, full time, after which graduates are eligible to complete a 48 week paid intern ship in either community or hospital pharmacy.
On completion of the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and intern ship, graduates are eligible for registration as a pharmacist in Australia.
The program prepares graduates for the contemporary role of the pharmacist in society ensuring that patients optimise medication usage. Initial courses on chemical, physical, and biological studies lead to professional specialities in later years.
Students accepted into UQ's School of Pharmacy enter a progressive, industry-driven educational environment that consistently employs and sets new standards in professional preparation. Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy

About the Program

The University of Queensland's School of Pharmacy has an established suite of graduate programs for practicing pharmacists. These programs are aimed at extending expertise and understanding in many domains of clinical pharmacy practice to optimize patient outcomes within a complex health environment.

The programs can be studied completely online in a flexible but structured format. Offering the best of both worlds, two optional face to face intensive weekends will allow in depth practical application in lieu of some online. The programs also involve some small group interactive learning and online tutorials with specialists and experts.

A multi-disciplinary team approach is used in the delivery of all programs, which includes input from clinical pharmacists, medical practitioners, academia and government agencies from metropolitan and rural environments.

Online tutorials will usually be held from 7-9 pm (Brisbane time) once a month for each individual course. Optional, intensive weekend workshops will be held at the beginning of semester 1 and during semester 2.

Why undertake a Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy program?

The professional roles of pharmacists are continuously evolving. The Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Program at UQ is supporting pharmacists into the future by facilitating the advancement of their skills, knowledge, understanding and confidence to practice competently in an ever changing healthcare environment.

The WHO concept of the 8 Star Pharmacist lends itself to a broad and holistic approach to pharmacy education and practice. It envisions pharmacists as care-givers, decision-makers, communicators, managers, life-long-learners, teachers, leaders and researchers. It is used as a framework for developing scope of practice and expertise as a clinical pharmacy practitioner.

While focusing on evidence-based, patient-centered care and up to date management of pharmacotherapy the program offers opportunities for hospital and community pharmacists to extend their practice in all WHO Star Pharmacist domains.
In addition, by completing the Clinical Pharmacy Program students will accumulate evidence for a portfolio that that can support all of the seven key domains of the Advanced  Pharmacy Practice Framework in Australia.

Study Options

This program is intended for those professionals wishing to develop their research skills in Pharmacy Practice and can be completed in a minimum of 3 years part-time or 18 months full-time. This degree includes the teaching of components of the Graduate Diploma with the addition of the Masters Research Project plus either the General Pharmacy Clerkship or Introduction to Bio statics.

MASTER OF PHARMACY

If you already have a bachelor’s degree, the two-year graduate entry Master of Pharmacy professional degree for those wishing to fast-track a rewarding and challenging career in the pharmacy profession.

As with the Bachelor of Pharmacy, you will be ideally prepared for employment in community, hospital or industrial pharmacy; or to pursue a career in research and academia, including advisory work in government and the pharmaceutical industry. With a strong practical focus, the Master of Pharmacy is designed to deliver graduates advanced clinical skills, ready for prominent roles in all aspects of the profession and for leadership in the use of innovative evidence-based practice.

Course content

The course offers a mix of lectures, tutorials, labs, small group work, problem-based learning and clinical placements which develop valuable practical skills and experience. The Master of Pharmacy is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) and allows graduates to progress towards registration as a pharmacist in Australia.   • have a prior bachelor's degree
  • have either met the minimum Grand Point Average (GPA) requirements, or;
    have sat the Graduate Australian Medical Admissions Test (GAMSAT), or;
    have sat the Medical College of Australia Test (MCAT)
  • meet a minimum of 42 out of 54 credit points, or equivalent, in seven prerequisite subjects at university level. (Note: all 54 credit points of prerequisite subjects must be successfully completed before commencing the second year of the program. It is possible to take on up to 12 required credit points in the first year of the program, ie overload, in order to fulfil the pre-requisite subject criteria).
  • have English language proficiency (if relevant).

Offered  for  the first time  in  2017, the Bachelor  of  Pharmacy  and Management is an innovative new course that will prepare you for a dynamic carrier.

In this degree you will learn how drugs are developed and how medications affect the human body. You will also develop an understanding of sound business practices integrated with sustainable healthcare models, and qualify to apply for professional registration.

Bachelor of Pharmacy and Management is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) and allows graduates to progress towards registration as a pharmacist in Australia. On completion of this degree, and following the compulsory pre-registration training period required for all candidates (including an Intern Training Program), graduates will be eligible for registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia. Course Content

The Bachelor of Pharmacy and Management requires five years of full time study. 

The first year is a foundation year in which you study biology and chemistry, and are introduced to pharmacy through foundation and social pharmacy studies.

The remaining three years are devoted to higher levels of biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences together with specialized clinical pharmacy studies.

In the fifth year, students complete an additional business unit of study in lieu of the Pharmacy Management unit of study, undertaken in the flagship Bachelor of Pharmacy program. The flexibility of the final semester of the pharmacy component of the program allows students to choose further units of study from the Business School if they wish.

The program covers topics including chemical, physical, pharmaceutical and pharmacological properties of medicines, and the application of these in the practice of pharmacy, as well as business fundamentals.
